Individual Health Insurance

Individual Health Insurance simply refers to purchasing coverage for you (and your family) individually, rather than through an employer or business group. This is generally either “On-Exchange” or “Off-Exchange.”

For 2024, the Federal Government reinsurance program that began in 2020 will continue. This will help to keep Colorado individual health insurance premiums close to 20% lower than they would be without the reinsurance program. This is great news. There are also a number of new carriers in the market which means more choices, more plan options and new provider network options. However, with these choices, it becomes even more important to understand exactly what you are buying when it comes to health insurance and what providers, doctors, hospitals, drugs are available in your network. Additionally, a new rule will allow employers/employees to use HRA funds to pay for individual health insurance premiums. This should open the door for employees with an employer that does not offer group health insurance to utilize the advantages of an HRA along with potentially also receiving a subsidy a.k.a. Advance Premium tax credit.

The group health insurance market in Colorado and many other states, definitely offers far more carrier/plan options, larger networks, more drug plan choices and policy start date options…Group health premiums are also often less expensive for comparable plans than individual coverage.

If you qualify for a subsidy (APTC), then you must purchase your individual health plan through Connect For Health Colorado or the exchange applicable to your state. If you do not qualify for an APTC, then you can purchase a health either off-exchange or on exchange.
